General Impression for Fourth Continental Artillery 1st (Turnbull's) Company.
Captain Charles Turnbull was giving command of the First Company, Fourth Regiment of Continental Artillery Line. However Captain Turnbull had been captured at Bound Brook , N.J. on April 13, 1777. The company's Captain-Lieutenant acted as commandant until Capt. Turnbull's release on April 30, 1780.
General area of origin or recruitment: The regiment was organized at Philadelphia from men recruited as far away Pennsylvania Frontier, New England and Georgia.
Ethnicity of Proctor's Regiment was diverse. Two-thirds of the unit was foreign-born: In fact 60% of the skilled positions ( sergeants, corporals, gunners, etc.) were of this group. The unit included Scotch-Irish, Germans, Scotch, English, and Welsh. Its Domestic distribution included Yankees, Yorkers, Virginians, and Georgians.
Geography covered on campaigns during the revolution: The regiment campaigned in Canadian, Northern, Middle, and Southern departments. One company (Graig's) seeing service at Fort Pitt and on the Ohio frontier.
The unit was authorized on October 16,1775 in Pennsylvania state service as Proctor's Artillery Company. The Regiment was disbanded November 15, 1783, at Philadelphia as the 4th Continental Artillery Regiment Continental Line.

Geography covered by unit during period of portrayal: The unit served at winter quarters at Valley Forge, as a garrison and provost unit at Philadelphia and with gun sections at Monmouth Courthouse, N.J. General uniform and equipment condition based on conditions of supply, campaign wear and unit discipline. This unit of Artillery were always in Regimental coats and generally dressed well even when the rest of the army suffered from shortages.
Headgear: Cocked hat with yellow worsted tape. A red feather to be mounted behind the cockade.
Coat: Military issued color, navy blue wool with red facings. Brass buttons and lining of red wool.
Footwear: Shoes plain toe with leather soles and heels.
Legwear: Gaitered trousers of white linen.
Stockings: White or gray cotton.
Shirt: White smock pattern of cotton.
Cartridge box: British Artillery pattern of black color with white crossbelt with brass buckles
Sidearm carriage: British Artillery pattern white leather crossbelt with black frog.
Firearm: Brown Bess and/or Charleville.
