Colonial life

Visitors to Colonial Williamsburg, VA., can now immerse themselves in Colonial life as farmers, seamstresses, gardeners, cooks and interior designers.

The Williamsburg Institute, a new project of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, offers courses year round that vary in length from a few hours to to a few days. Visitors can cook 18th Century foods in the Governor's Palace kitchen, sew 18th Century clothing or try their hands at such trades as coopering, basket and carpentry.

In Draft Animal Plowing participants plow a field after learning about soil tillage. Garden design, flower arrangement and early American furniture are other themes.
The programs are designed primarily for adults 18 and older, although one, Young People at Work and Play, offers tours and hands-on activities for children 5 to 13.

Programs vary throughout the year. Participants must stay in a Colonial Williamsburg hotel. Packages start at $125 per person, double occupancy a night through March, excluding meals. They include program fees and a one-year pass to museums and exhibits buildings. Reduced rates are offered for children 12 and younger. For more information, call: 800-603-0948.

EARL SAYS THANKS! Earl Ace (King's Own, 4th Foot) would like to thank everyone for the notes and phone calls of encouragement during his recovery from heart transplant surgery done January 22 of this year. At present, he continues physical therapy at Marianjoy Rehab Center in Wheaton, Illinois (near Cantigny). He hopes to be in shape for some reenactment events close to home this season -- if not for soldiering, then at least for playing his hammer dulcimer for the enjoyment of the public.

Since he may be moving from place to place, notes and cards may be sent to him in care of Jan Lord, who will make sure he gets his mail in a timely fashion:
