Materials: Chrome yellow silk taffeta, homespun wool lining, soft wool batting.
Provenance: Paper label reads "Royal School of Art Needlework, March 13, 1911. Old Quilting, 1760."
Condition: Skirt panels were cut down and altered from the original. The waist is unpicked. Eight machine-stitched darts (average 7" long) were added at the waist. The original mid-18th century quilting is in excellent condition, beautifully worked through three layers of fabric. The 9 1/2" deep border at the hem is quilted in a lovely pattern of stylized fleur de lis and scrolls.
Comments: Despite alterations to this skirt, it would make an excellent collection study because of the high quality of workmanship and beauty of the design.
